About the Parish Council
The Council is made up of 15 Parish Councillors who are elected to Office each 4 years (the next elections are in May 2007). Where vacancies occur during the 4 year term of the Council through resignations etc then the Council is able to co-opt members onto the Council.
The Parish Council meet monthly on the first Tuesday of each month at 7.15pm in the Garden Room at the Henfield Hall. Much of the Council work is done through Committees of which there are 5, namely:
- Finance and General Purposes Committee
- Lighting and Open Spaces Committee
- Plans Advisory Committee
- Cemetery Committee
- Museum Committee
Agendas of meetings and details of when the Committees meet can be found on the Council's website as can the responsibilities of the individual Committees.
Plans of pending planning applications can be viewed at the Parish Council Office during the opening times mentioned above. The Plans Advisory Committee is a statutory consultative Committee which means that the Planning Authority, which is Horsham District Council, must consult with the Parish Council and seek their views, although the final decision is that of the Planning Authority.
Three Councillors of the Parish Council (together with three District Councillors and two co-opted members) also serve on the Henfield Commons Joint Committee, which is a Sub-Committee of Horsham District Council, and their role is to oversee the management of the three Commons in Henfield together with the Tanyard Field. Full details can be viewed on the Parish Council website.
The Parish Council meeting, and all Committee meetings, are open to the public and on the Agenda of each meeting towards the beginning of the meeting is an Open Forum at which members of the public are entitled to address the Council.
Henfield Parish Council is also a Burial Authority and is responsible for the management and control of Henfield Cemetery (this is not the Cemetery attached to St Peter's Church Henfield but the Cemetery located north of Upper Station Road Henfield - entrance through the lychgate in Upper Station Road).
The outer office of the Parish Council Offices contains an information point at which leaflets in respect of many local venues and activities are available. In addition the Henfield Guide which is published bi-annually is available from the Parish Council Office.
