HENFIELD -
Through the Lens of Marjoie Baker
This attractive book celebrates the work of the late Marjorie Baker, village photographer of Henfield from the 1930s to the 1990s. From an archive of around 30,000 negatives bequeathed to Henfield Prish Council in 2006, Alan Barwick and more than 60 people have researched and written captions to 200 specially selected photographs – a fitting memorial to Marjorie’s achievements in the world of photography. Their text is a misture of anecdote and historical information, and includes some of Marjorie’s memories.
The
book is divided into seven sections: leisure; views around Henfield; people
at work; views in Henfield; Henfield events; local people; children and
family groups. Many of the views of Henfield and its surrounding villages
will awaken nostalgic memories, while many who have lived in the area will
recognise portraits of village characters or family groups.
All those with an interest in this area in the middle and later 20th century will welcome this beautifully illustrated addition to Henfield’s history.
Priced at £15.99, the book is available for purchase at Stokes
newsagents in the High Street.
